Jerry: Why you're quoting a German eMail on CR I don't know. German was my first language and I enjoy seeing it, but I think Dale disparages this sort of thing. All this flap about the Merckx bike on eBay is silly. Simply eMailing the seller was enough to determine that he allegedly bought the bike as an early Merckx, already painted, and added the parts. It wouldn't be easy, or even possible, to determine who the maker was. It's evident it wasn't De Rosa. Merckx decal sets are available for sale throughout the world. Some are good other less so. The seller's eBay ad is very deceptive, but, like a dog biting a man, this is hardly news. All eBay sales are at the buyers" (and sellers') peril. Merckx's experience with bikes has been discussed so many times here that it seems pointless to repeat. Speedbicycles' Merckx Colnago is correct. Speedbicycles never alleges that Merckx rode this bike. Merckx didn't like anyone to "steal his shadow". The real question, never answered, is whether Merckx licensed Colnago to produce this bike. Of course he never rode. Some say this licensure issue lead to a break between the two men. As far as the Hour Record bike(s), Windsor put their label on the bikes. The bikes were Colnagos. One of these bikes is in Cambiago, the other in a Brussels Metro stop, named in Eddy's honor.
