David, These were imported by Gene Portuesi / Cyclopedia ...a famous? shop/mail order/importer in Michigan. Gene was a racer as well IIRC. I bought a simillar but men style bicycle at Cirque eons ago...dragged it to California. It was the derailleur bike circa 1950 if Schwinn didn't float your boat. Mine was a bit too small for me so I moved it along a few years ago. I have seen pics of a few in great shape 60 years on and they are striking!
