A trick that has worked for me in the past and avoid the issue of improper slipping or clamping is rubber cement. Put a layer on the inside of the clamp and LET IT DRY completely. Do the same by putting a layer no the bike- also let it dry. You can build up a couple coats if you would like, letting each dry. Place the clamp on and tighten it down. Use your finger or a rubber cement pickup to remove the excess. This give you a thin layer of cushion, a little bit of sticky and something that will not damage you paint. Plus, if you decide to remove, rubber cement comes up quite easy with simple green, rubbing alcohol or a citrus based cleaner.
