William, I had an Alan aluminum frame (Super Record model) which I bought about 3-4 years ago, built it up, rode it on and off for a couple of years, and sold it last year. It was a very comfy bike. It was my main commuter for a while. I kept hearing how the aluminum would fatigue and eventually fail on these frames. I had no problems with mine. But all this talk made me kind of paranoid of riding it. So when I started hearing a creak around the bottom bracket, it got me worried until I repositioned the clamp-on front derailleur with a little grease, and voila, creak be gone. I have seen photos of other Alans where one of the head lugs would split. That's the end of those frames. Components? I would think mine was Campy Super Record originally. My goal in building mine up was as much Campy as I could, and at least the rest Italian components. I'd encourage you to build it and enjoy riding it, until you too get paranoid about riding it. Then get a nice lugged steel frame to replace it.
