Marc....
I get the ganged up CR messages so someone may have already mentioned the problem of matching shorter chainstays w/a triple. Get a Raleigh International from that era. Longer stays, smoother shifts, fewer jams under load. There are bikes w/longer stays but the International's stays are ample and the longer frame is easier on a gezzer's bones than my '72 Raleigh Pro. My International has a TA triple on a Stronglight crank and gives me no nightmares.
Some folks get additional chain-length by tucking the axle as far back as it will go in the d/o's BUT this alters the angle at which the derailleur wraps the chain. In my experience, this impedes smooth shifting, too.
For additional range on a double (albeit fewer extra gear choices) try Alpine gearing with a 32 or 34 in the front and the rear.
Gut Luck!
