The auction was for CPL Rims nd the 'guy in seatle" sells Ghisallo rims. CPL Rims, according to the auction, re made of Ash and Hickory, and Ghisallo rims are made of beech. I don't know enough to discuss which rim is better, or how they ride... I'd like o know - since I would like to buy a set...used or new... Here's another question - if the rim is wider than a typical tubular - say 24mm who makes wider tubulars to put on these wheels? What was the typical tubular idth when they were using these in the Giro?

Hi Rob - I missed the thread about CPL rims but I sell the Ghisallo rims and have built up a few sets now, and also a few sets of various vintage wood rims. They ride very nice. They absorb the road shock very well and build up nice and true and of course they look terrific. Here are some of the Ghisallos built up: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8379107@N03/3180486893/in/set-72157611406227460/ I mounted some Continental tires on them and they look and fit nice. They are pretty normal width and take any normal tubular that is not too narrow, but if you want a vintage looking wider tire there is a Challenge Paris Roubaix that I also have for sale that looks very nice on them, and also there is a wider hardpack style cyclocross tire from Tufo, the Diamond 30, that looks great as it has brick red sidewalls. See some of those on my Grubb here, on NOS Lobdells: http://www.flickr.com/photos/8379107@N03/639315239/in/set-72157600517353314/ The only black "single tube" tires I know of that have been made in recent years are the ones from Coker Tire (who mostly makes vintage car tires) but they say "for show only not for riding". I don't know what that means. Maybe they don't hold air. They don't list them any more so maybe that is history too. Send me the link to the auction rims please so I can see what they are.

thanks
