>>"Most of the Schwinn touring bikes of the era were made in Japan"

I believe that Schwinn's touring bikes (and many of thier other offerings) from the middle of the '80s were actually built in Columbia, Mississippi.  Their Columbus-tubed touring line from '84 through '89 is well matched to most other production American/Japanese tourers of the time.

The high-end one was the Voyager (and the Voyager SP), and this bike still brings in $$ when found in good condition.  However it's little brother, the '85 Le Tour Luxe and the '86 Passage (the same bike only offered these tw years, but NOT to be confused the '83-84 Le Tour Luxe) is a good option usually found at a bargin price.

Just my thoughts-
