See if you can slide the front crank in a bit on the axle to center it on the third cog (you say one front chainwheels but later the small large combo but I am assuming a single chainwheel. Usually a cottered crank has a few mm of potential adjustment. Also I would try a supple but old school chain. A Renold might be a good choice. Hilary Stone often has them. I find that equipment of a given era works best together and a wider chain may a) sit better on the cogs and b) be provided better guidance by the jockey wheels and cage. Bon chance! Front spindle is baylis "23" which measures just over 123mm which Sutherlands specs for 5sp. Stronglight Steel cranks with alloy TA chainring. FW is an Atom. Problem is that gears 2-5 work just dandy, but when I'm in the small large combo, the chain skips out. I tried messing with my limit to get the derailleur over a bit. No dice. Chain is a new SRAM PC-9 with tons of flex, so no cross chaining is involved.  Could it be that I need a longer spindle? Does BB flex play a factor? What about the toothless jockey wheels? Anyone have a similar problem or suggestions on how to fix? Sean Flores San Francisco, CA
