I love bolt-in valves! At the 1982 Cherry Pie Criterium, in Napa, Calif. I saw tubular hanging in a tree. I got a stick and pulled it down, thinking it is classless to litter like that. When I got it down, I noticed that the tubular was brand new, with a tiny dab of glue alternating with the spoke holes.
Then I saw the rest of the story: One of the racers walked by with a shiny new De Rosa over his shoulder, with road rash through his shorts and into his butt. The rear rim had the same dab of glue as the rim, and it was gouged and bent where it had slid across the pavement.
I don't remember if I told the guy the tubular could be fixed or not. I went back to Velo-Sport in Berkeley, where they kept a large tin box of tubular repair parts. And for the time it took me to put in the new valve, I had a Vittoria Corsa CG, the hot new tubular for 1982.
