FWIW: I've been using Rigida rims, similar to the currently available from Jan Heine Grand Bois rims, similar to old Super Champion M58 - no hooks at all, as can be seen from the photo on Jan's site - with modern clinchers (Grand Bois 28mm and now Michelin pro2 25mm) pumped up to about 100psi for several years now, on a rider - no problems, so far. (Knock on wood...)
