It's just a sales gimmick. It gets your name out there in front of a lot of eyes cheaply for off Ebay sales where you can show off some stock and exchange contact info with potential buyers. It also creates buzz (like this) and will get your name and merchandise out there with all the people that use "sort by highest price first" as their option. There are lots of reasons to use Ebay as a promotional tool without ever intending to actually sell any items through their system.
