There were, according the the catalog, four types of outer rings, LD and MD, double and triple. The LD sounds like 130 for double inner/ triple middle, which you confirm. And Sutherlands says 85 for triple inner both LD and MD which you also confirm. The MD double inner/ triple middle the catalog says had tooth range of 34-37/ 34-35. So it's smaller than 130. A 34T minimum sounds like it would be 110 BCD which was a very common circle in the 80's. But it could be the Campy triple inner 100 BCD or the Avocet/Ofemga larger inner ring of 102 BCD. Or they could have made up their own. The reasonable thing to do would have been 110, but then they chose 85 rather than 86 for the triple inner.

So anyone have any Deore rings to trade or sell? I seem to have two LD rings, one double, one triple. I also have a pair if Deore arms fitted with TA rings.

\r?\n> {margin:0;}Hi

\r?\n> Jerry. On my triple the middle ring is 130mm and the inner

\r?\n> does, indeed, seem to be 85mm bcd. I tried mounting a

\r?\n> Stronlight 99 ring but could not get even 2 bolts to line

\r?\n> up. On a similar note, CR member Paul Grens had me check the

\r?\n> compatability of a Zeus Competicion crankarm w/ aTA

\r?\n> Cyclotouriste outer ring. Although the ring seats nicely on

\r?\n> the arm, the holes do not line up. One could easily slot the

\r?\n> ring but the Zeus Comp. flange protrudes a bit beyond the

\r?\n> ring arms so it all gets kind of ugly and starts to seem not

\r?\n> worth it. Good luck w/ your project. Billy Ketchum; Chicago,

\r?\n> I'm considering the original Deore for an upcoming

\r?\n> build.  Here are the Deore cranks in a 1982 catalog:

\r?\n>

\r?\n> http://www.sheldonbrown.com/shimano1982/pages/27.html

\r?\n>

\r?\n> The crankarms are compatible with TA Cyclotourist outer

\r?\n> rings, but the Deore rings were 5-hole, not 6-hole like

\r?\n> Cyclotourist.  Outer ring could be drilled for only one

\r?\n> inner ring (double) or two (triple).  But there were

\r?\n> also LD and MD outer rings.  The catalog does not give

\r?\n> the BCD of any of the rings, only the range of teeth for

\r?\n> each.  From this it looks like the LD double probably

\r?\n> had a 130 BCD inner, compatible with DuraAce rings.

\r?\n> Sutherland's in two Editions I have says the triple

\r?\n> inner was 85 mm, only 1 mm different from Stronglight model

\r?\n> 99.  Did they really make it 1 mm different from one of

\r?\n> the most widely available touring cranks?

\r?\n>

\r?\n> But the MD version is a mystery.  The inner ring on

\r?\n> the MD double and the middle ring on the MD triple had a

\r?\n> range of 34-37 and 34-35T respectively.  One thinks

\r?\n> these must have been the same BCD, but what?  Did they

\r?\n> use the common 110 BCD or the Campy triple inner 100 BCD or

\r?\n> the Avocet/Ofmega triple inner 102 BCD?  Anyone have

\r?\n> any original Deore MD rings for trade or sale?  Or any

\r?\n> original Deore rings for that matter?
