Thanks to all of those who commented and supplied links and information.

For the sake of the archives, these two links show the type of bolt with the two piece wedge needed for the frames without a slotted seat-tube:

It's similar to the bodged version I have, but uses a stud rather than a bolt, and appears to be steel rather than aluminium as mine is.

I should be able to machine one up.
