Well, that would still leave Beryl the first British world road champion, as she had previously won in 1960. And Simpson would be first male British world road champion and only British Pro world road champion. Somewhere there must be a list of amateur world champions.

\r?\n> Hi Jerry,

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Graham Webb [Great Britain] won the 1967 world amateur road

\r?\n> champs [same day as Beryl Burton won the ladies]

\r?\n>

\r?\n> I have the actual Brooks pro saddle Graham used that day to

\r?\n> win his title!

\r?\n> My only uncertainty is if some other Brit may have won the

\r?\n> mens amateur road race.  Most net searches will turn up

\r?\n> a history of world professional champions, but for a number

\r?\n> of years there was an amateur road championship as

\r?\n> well.  Merckx won it before turning pro, and it was

\r?\n> still being held in 1974 when I attend the Worlds in

\r?\n> Montreal, with a Pole named Kowalski winning as I

\r?\n> recall.  At some point, I think the amateur event was

\r?\n> eliminated and the Pro race redesignated "Elite".  Then

\r?\n> in I think 1996, the under 23 road race was established,

\r?\n> perhaps intended to include some of the riders who in the

\r?\n> past would have contested the amateur title.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Anyone have a link to the history of the amateur road

\r?\n> championships and a list of its champions?

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Regards,

\r?\n>
