I think I know those bikes, intimately. Some years back I worked on them as the bike wrangler for an episode of "Touched by an Angel" that was supposed to take place in China. We got three 55-foot trailers full of these and a bunch of cargo trikes and pedal rickshas. There was even a bike set up with a sharpening stone on the rear carrier, operated by pedal power, of course. It was my job to make sure as many as possible were rideable. I spent the first of three 12-hour days alone in a warehouse just performing triage, but IIRC only about twenty or so bikes didn't make the cut, and some were just too new-looking for the period feel they wanted. Then I got to hang around on set for the two weeks or so of filming. No, I didn't get a credit.

There were no "classic" or on-topic bikes at all. Nearly all were the ubiquitous English-style utility bike, with rod brakes and one speed.

if you live around hollywood ca, you may want to check out this auction. looks like there may be some cool old bikes there. don't see any drop bars, but some of those may be really old safety bicycles. could be worth the price to get 30 of them, of your choice.........
