Interesting. I currently have a 1974 Carlsbad (#389) and a 1971 Italian (#11-71), the latter a Baylis restore in fabulous candy apple green and the former in original grey/silver. The Carlsbad shows more filing, thinner lugs, but definite filing marks whereas the Italian job is very nicely finished. Carlsbad is also not as nicely finished around the stay/dropout junctions. For a friend, also had a 1975 Italian model, and side by side, it stood up as quite nicely finished too.
I like them all, differences are subtle, will have to judge based on the ride.

I recently had a 1974?Carlsbad?Masi Gran Criterium (#247) side by side with a 1971 Italian Masi Gran Criterium.? Both frames were down to bare metal.?It was an interesting comparison.?I would?definitely give the edge to the Carlsbad frame.?Wish I would have taken some pictures.? Both finished bikes?can be seen ?on Wooljersey if you search "Pyzyk".
