George- You could remove/change the drive side axle spacers so that the over all lock nut dimension is the same as your frame's drop out width. This will involve cone wrenches and other spacer sizes but not opening up the bearings (although it's a golden oppertunity to clean and relube). Is is likely that the axle length will be about 5mm too long on the drive side and might need shortening (with a hack saw and or grinder). It is also likely that the wheel's dish will need correction. (Dish is the rim's keeping centered between the lock nuts and not the hub flanges). This is just truing the rim all the way around to pull it to the left side a bit more. All this is pretty straight forward for those comfy with basic wheel work. Take care to double check the hub freewheel seat to lock nut dimension and make sure it's not too little to fit the freewheel with out the high gear cog (or chain as it shifts off the high cog) hitting the seat stay end.
