I have a Columbus frame built by Don Milberger. I think it was the second bike he built. What beautiful lugs! He was a very nice guy. After he fitted me for the bike at his former shop, The Bicycle Shop in Concord, CA (the original location on Galindo St. between Salvio St. and Pacheco St., not his later shop at the intersection of Galindo St. and Monument Blvd.), he invited me up to his house in Lafayette or Orinda, I forget which, to see his shop, and we talked for quite awhile. I had been referred to Don in 1972 by a member of the Berkeley Bicycle Club who told me that Don was a fabulous silver solderer and had started building custom frames. Don told me he learned to silver solder so well when he was working for Lawrence Livermore laboratory and had to construct a lot of apparatus for scientific experiments. It just so happened that silver soldering tubes together was the quickest and easiest method for constructing the various apparatus that the laboratory needed, and he did a lot of it. Practice makes perfect, I guess. And I still have some very useful Bicycle Research tools in my tool chest. He will be missed. Bill Crowell
