My father's brother emigrated from Germany (Chemnitz) to Buenos Aires in th=
e late 30s, and still lives there. His career was (mostly) in industrial ai=
r conditioning. Argentina is an interesting scale: large enough for a domes=
tic market that justifies local manufacturing (and a long history of tariff=
s to encourage it), but small enough not to support a lot of R&D. In ad=
dition, Argentina and Chile are much more "European" in outlook than most L=
atin American countries. When we were there in the 70s, there were daily ne=
wspapers in Italian, English, German, and who knows what other languages (i=
n addition to Spanish, of course). So, much industrial "Intellectual =
Property" was manufactured under license from European firms - took care of=
the R&D issue, and had cachet. I would suspect that some great e=
ntrepreneur figured that he could make a living selling locally made but li=
censed Frejus. But didn't last past the next round of inflation or recessio=
n.

That's my guess, and I'm sticking with it. :-)
harvey sachs<br=
