While I can deduce that you have arms with a 144 BCD, to provide the 42 middle ring... Your Spindle is a later unit I am pretty sure, which is a bit longer, couple that with pre CPSC cranks which have more material on the inside, and that might indeed put you too far for the front to swing. Assuming that the cups are the correct type for the spindle.
The result, you might need the earlier triple type of bottom bracket. Or a triple marked -1.5,
Have you checked the chainline? I bet its off.
