We used to take that tape idea one step further. We would use cotton handle bar tape and apply contac cement on the inside of the clamp and on the inside of the tape. Attach the tape to the inside of the clamp and with scissors and a file,carefully remove the excess tape from the clamp so it wouldn't show on the frame...
