Hi all. About 30 yrs. ago i retrofitted a front brake to Al Pellicore's original Wastyn track bike [ca. 1940]. I used a Universal 68 but had to mount it on a reversed Campy drop bolt. I may have used a different spring but i'm not sure. I probably had to drill the fork as well as there was absolutely no clearance for any normal brake. Al grew up in Chicago and wanted to be a 6 day racer. He was an admirer of Torchy Pieden [sp.?] WW2 intervened and he served in the navy as a Seabee. Later he was a Union Ironworker and one of my instructors in that trade. He was an incredible man w/ great energy. The seatstays were uncapped - this was so you could see that the builder had not substituted solid bars for these typically thin tubes. Al sold the bike for something ridiculously low like $150.00 in the early '80s. I would gladly have given him many times that for the association w/ Wastyn but mainly as a memento of Al. The bolt is either in reality or my imagination, but as I remember it, the bolt exits the fork crown and then turns up so that one can mount a standard brake caliper on a tight clearance track bike or the like. I see they sell drop bolts but no lift bolts for the opposite situation... Garth Libre in Miami Fl USA I bet you could just turn the drop-bolts up instead of down... thomas seaman portland, oregon U.S. of A. http://www.kokoPedli.com
