Well, all's well that ends well. I believe I said in an earlier post that this was a test of whether or not the CR list was a real community. I think we passed the test with flying colors. (Colours for you Brits). I think we should keep in mind that the most generous contributions were not those of $100+, but the $10 or $20 that folks really had to dig deep for.

I think those who can should kick in a small monthly fee to help with hosting. I had applied for a WJ account just before the crash because FLIKR had begun restricting storage and uploads in free accounts to try to extort people into "upgrading" to fee accounts. If I'm going to pay a monthly fee, I'd MUCH rather pay it to WJ than to FLIKR.

\r?\n> Sorry for all the email about this.

\r?\n> If you don't know what I'm talking

\r?\n> about; http://www.wooljersey.com/gallery

\r?\n> suffered a disk failure. It's a

\r?\n> site I ran where people - many on this list - could post

\r?\n> pictures of

\r?\n> bicycles. I didn't have a disk backup and sent the disk for

\r?\n> data recovery to

\r?\n> a reputable vendor. I mentioned the cost and amazingly the

\r?\n> members of this

\r?\n> list contributed more than enough to cover the cost. Thank

\r?\n> you! I'll gift

\r?\n> some of the balance to two worthy CR members and keep the

\r?\n> rest for the

\r?\n> monthly hosting fee. Right now it's $125 / month but I hope

\r?\n> to move it to

\r?\n> somewhere cheaper.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> I requested a PDF of the invoice. I felt funny about asking

\r?\n> for money with

\r?\n> just my word that I needed it. Here's what I just paid a

\r?\n> few moments ago:

\r?\n>

\r?\n> http://209.190.31.210/apache2-default/302332.pdf

\r?\n>

\r?\n> I also got this description of the work from Kelly Chessen

\r?\n> at

\r?\n> drivesavers.com:

\r?\n>

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Thank you for choosing DriveSavers for your data recovery

\r?\n> needs. As we

\r?\n> discussed on the phone, we're pleased to report the

\r?\n> recovery was successful.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> The drive had suffered from a failure of the actuator

\r?\n> (read/write head

\r?\n> assembly). The failure of this component led to physical

\r?\n> damage on the

\r?\n> platters and software corruption.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> The recovery process began in our class 100 clean room,

\r?\n> where we worked to

\r?\n> overcome the damage and extract an "image" of the drive.

\r?\n> This is a

\r?\n> sector-by-sector copy of entire drive capacity. Due to the

\r?\n> media damage,

\r?\n> this imaging process was laborious. Once the image was as

\r?\n> complete as

\r?\n> possible, it then went to one of our software recovery

\r?\n> engineers who are

\r?\n> specialists in resolving corruption, repairing files and

\r?\n> file structure and

\r?\n> extracting useable data. The image file contained corrupted

\r?\n> information as a

\r?\n> result of the actuator writing data incorrectly. Once the

\r?\n> data had been

\r?\n> verified and repaired to the greatest extent possible, it

\r?\n> was scanned for

\r?\n> viruses and loaded to the final target media.

\r?\n> Given the damaged state of the drive, we were very pleased

\r?\n> to accomplish a

\r?\n> recovery that appears to be about 95% complete. The cause

\r?\n> of the drive

\r?\n> failure cannot be determined with certainty, but a power

\r?\n> fluctuation

\r?\n> (black-out, brown-out or surge) would be the most likely

\r?\n> cause.

\r?\n>

\r?\n>

\r?\n> I should receive the new, portable disk containing the

\r?\n> restored data

\r?\n> tomorrow. I'll start backing it up immediately. I'm gone

\r?\n> camping this

\r?\n> weekend but I'll get to work on the wooljersey restoration

\r?\n> ASAP when I get

\r?\n> back. It will not be a quick restoration. Some of the data

\r?\n> is still a bit

\r?\n> scrambled (see above) so it might take me a week or two to

\r?\n> get that sorted.

\r?\n> Once it's up on the current server I'll look to move it to

\r?\n> a more

\r?\n> cost-effective hosting service.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Thank you all very much! If anyone wants to put something

\r?\n> in the wooljersey

\r?\n> tip cup for future hosting, you can paypal me at this

\r?\n> address and NOW I'LL

\r?\n> STOP PANDERING FOR MONEY AND SYMPATHY AND GET BACK TO

\r?\n> WORK.
