Sutherland's handbook for bicycle mechanics contained the dimensions and threading information (and thus, interchangeability) for just about all the parts available in the 1970's and 1980's, I understand. I have never seen a copy, but it's published in Berkeley:

They are offering 3 chapters free on the website and I just looked at the headset chapter. It includes the stack height for recent models (~40) of the 1" headsets, which is very useful information in parts selection.
I understand that big chunks of the earlier editions have been excerpted on Sheldon Brown's website. So, if you are interested in knowing about 1970's and 1980's bicycle technology, either read Sheldon's bike website or get a defunct copy of Sutherland's Handbook. A CD can be purchased with editions #1-#6 of Sutherland's Handbook.
The early editions attempted to be comprehensive of the whole industry, but the present editions are less so (probably due to the proliferation of chi-chi parts from small machine shops like White Industries, etc.)
