Subject: [CR] Cottered Axle interchangeability/compatibility

Dear All, I have a compatibility issue between a 1950's Gnutti cottered chainset and a Magistroni bottom bracket axle. They're not, compatible that is. The bore through the cranks is slightly too small for the axle. I had thought that both being Italian from the 50's they'd go together like ramalama ding dong. Is this a tolerance issue? This seems unlikely as the Magistroni axle is a truly beautiful piece of machining and the cranks aren't shabby either.

Were there different sizes of axle/crank interface for 50's cranks? I know that my Chater-Lea cranks weren't happy with a Bayliss Wiley axle and I'm trying to get a correct Chater-Lea axle (#1615 for 1/4" balls single chainset- if anyone has one to sell).

I'm very keen to use these two part together the BB is NOS and took a while to come by the cranks are excellent and seem much harder to come by than the splined cotterless variety). So some maining of the cranks might be in order.

So what do you know?

Thanks,
Simon Bird,
