I responded earlier but I actually just dragged out my Sutherlands 3rd edition from 1981 so the champion shorties are: Dura-Ace CS-49 (39mm), Suntour Superbe small (40mm), Universal Super 68 #102 small (41mm). The Wienmann 500 is 43mm but cetainly has enough material to safely file it to 41mm. Don't file the Universal though, no extra material there.

Note that in each case this was a short reach model. The text indicates the existence, and I have seen some examples, of Universal brakes in many reaches for a given model.

I've got a Weinmann 500 that came on a Paramount track bike with the top of the centerbolt ground down to clear the headset lower race, and there's some extra material around the caliper's brake pad slots that could be filed shorter inside. I've not done that on mine, but have removed material on the outside of the slotted part of another set to mimic the Campagnolo brakes back in the seventies and still working fine. Might be good for 45 mm.

Esteemed listmembers,

Need a front brake for a track bike. Universal 68 front is too long. I am pulling my hair out for a solution. From the center of the fork hole to the bottom of the braking surface on the rim is about 43mm. What are my choices. Help Please!!!

Thank You!
