Subject: [CR] RRA Chainset

I thought I might weigh in here as this era Raleighs are my favorite vintage bikes and I have had a few hanging from the rafters over the years. Here are my recollections based on the models that I have owned: <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Pre-war RRA – Resembles a postwar Clubman (like Alan's) but with very finely fluted cranks. Fluting around circumference of BB boss and both sides of arms. Quite lovely. Chainrings may be the same. (’39 RRA)

Post-war RRA – Elaborate finely forged cranks as shown in Peter’s pictures. Fragile arms and rings as I have seen broken examples of each. Reg Harris went for a Williams/Stronglight combination IIRC. (’48 (2), ’49, ’50 RRA's)

Clubman – Similar to prewar RRA but less elaborate fluting on cranks, typically front of arms only. (’49, ’51 Clubmans)

Lenton Sports – Similar to Clubman but no herons on chainrings with fluting on front of cranks. (’50 Lenton Sports)

Lenton Tourist – Similar to Clubman with herons on chainrings but no fluting on cranks. Just like Alan's although this model is quite rare. ('51Lenton Tourist)

Based on my experience I would say Alan's chainset are likely from a postwar some variety Lenton or Clubman.

I love these bikes....
