In the bike world where 1 1/8" is referred to as 28.6mm, the Italians mix 36mm w/24 threads per inch, and plenty of other oddities, 171mm is not odd at all.  It equals 6 3/4".  The 165mm cranksets were really 6 1/2".  It was just Sugino using metric measurements on Imperial spec'd components.

The French were right with all metric, but lost (once again).  Jim Carter B'ham, AL

Dear Dave:

The Mightys are one piece forged cranks with a 144mm bolt circle (except for the Mighty Tour which used the 110mm circle) while the Maxys usually have the crank spider swaged onto the arms, and use the 110 mm bolt circle.  The Maxys usually seem to be made of softer aluminum and the ones I had creaked on the BB unless really tight, although the Mightys were not as hard as Campy Aluminum.  The Mightys were also an odd 171mm for their standard length (I'm not sure what the Maxys used).  So in general, the Mightys were the higher end cranks.

Can anyone tell me the difference between a Sugino "Mighty" and "Maxy" cranks?

Thank you,
