Re: [CR] Ebay "PAE" with GP Wilson bits

(Example: Framebuilders:Cecil Behringer)

Dale,

You pretty much got it. The people from PAE (which I believe stood for "Performance Advanced Engineering" or some such thing. I remember seeing a few of these bikes here in SD back in the day. First of all, they had NOTHING at all to do with Masi in CA. These guys were a bunch of technical nerds (not that there's anything wrong with that) and were capable of some seriously cobby work. Stick to the computer, these guys could hurt someone with a torch. They didn't last long. Yeah, they bought GP Wilson stainless junk; but that alone is not a good thing for people who are not all that good at building frames.

I remember that Dave Tesch had a different meaning for the letters PAE; one I can't repeat here for sure! If you are looking for something "rare" then this might be your cup of tea. If you are looking for something good; this might be your cup of poison.

That's all I remember, other than this group of people were a "bit unusual" compared to the rest of the people making frames here in San Diego at that time. The bike in the picture is probably the best thing they ever made; everything else heads south from there.

Sorry to be so blunt. I'm just recalling our impressions at the time.

I remember seeing PAE at the bike show for a couple of years in the early to mid 1980s...

Seems like they made use of computers to a greater degree than most to that point. Maybe the San Diego folks can shed some light as to who they were and what happened to them?

The eBay seller takes a few liberties, in my opinion, speculating that PAE "must have been working closely with or apprenticing for George Wilson, as it uses many of the rare and exotic G.P. Wilson components, such as lugs, dropouts and aero shift boss." That seems a huge assumption because at that time, anyone could call up George and order frame parts from him.

Then the seller goes on to say "The builder may have also worked at the California Masi Workshop as the workmanship on this frameset is superb!" Ha! So, if there is good workmanship, it must have been in association with Masi USA?

Sigh, why can't folks just let the product speak for itself without the Barnum & Bailey exaggerations?
