I believe I was first to reply to the original post by David Kulcinski last Thursday. Not that I really knew much about the Dawes brand, but no one else had responded after several hours, at least not on-list, and I was a little disappointed. I thought people were either too proud or indifferent to bother with this less glamorous brand, or perhaps felt timid about jumping in before the water warmed up a little. I wondered if some few people were quietly chatting off list, "flying under the radar", and thereby depriving me, at least, of the pleasure of a more eccentric topic. It turns out I was wrong, happily.

Perhaps it was the combination of winter weather and slow news days, but the cork was finally drawn and a rich flood of conversation poured out. If I can be indulged for using too many metaphors, I will say that a good helping of English roast beef has been a welcome change from the usual diet of garlic and tomato paste.
