TA extractors along with the Stronglight ones had rounded over screws that worked against the axle end. After the first use they had a ring groove worn into the rounded end from the bolt hole in the axle.

I suspect that the bolts were intentionally soft so as not to damage the BB axle.

If I remember correctly they both sold for somewhere between $7 and $14 each back in the 70s. Shops used them because they were cheap and easy to use. When the ends got too mushed over, you just took and ground them round again!
