Peter brought up an interesting point about Raleigh: that a majority of their production was for export. At some point, either just before or just after WW2, the main Raleigh Factory (in Birmingham?) was the largest factory (of any kind) in the world, not just in the UK.
No company gets that large without delivering a good product at a fair price.
