Hi Marc. The rear thingy looks like a saddlebag support. A lot of British bikes, even top end, came w/out derailleur hangers. [I even saw Jack Taylor brochures in the '70s that still showed models w/ Cyclo type mounts on the right chainstay!]  I'm no Sturmey Archer expert but i think dual controls were typical on the 5speed models unlike more recent internally geared hubs which only have a llinkage on the right side even when they have 14 speeds. The brakes are interesting, but I'm more intrigued by the frame details. Apparently it was purpose-built as there is no (that I can see) derailleur hanger. And what's with that rear brake protector/rack thingy? Also odd are the two shifters for a 5 speed; although I have never seen an SA 5 speed implementation. Either way, it's a sweet JT.
