Subject: [CR] Tire standardization timeline?

Honest, I can't find much on the web and the CR archives are down. So I ask...

What's the story on the standardization of tire sizes?

Dunlop's first bicycle tire was a tubular, but clincher tires were invented only a few years later. Was the now-standard tubular size standardized in the early 20th century? Who agreed to the standard? When (and by whom) were the French standards established? How about the common inch sized clincher tires?

Does someone know?
