Hi Robbie,

My Dawes story is weird. I hope this does not bother any of you, but it shocked me. My dad had a hard life growing up during the depression and he told me that any bike was a great bike then in the Detroit, Michigan area. My second ten speed bike was a Dawes Galaxy. Someone ripped it off in the early 1970's. I remember buying it new on the rack at Centerville Lawnmower and Cycle shop on Centerville Rd. in Garland, Texas. It was brown and I was so in love with it. Until....gone, lock, cable, and all, gone. Then my Dad felt sorry for me and went to the Dallas police pound auctions on Saturday mornings. He brought me back the coolest black Dawes trimmed in gold. It had been bent and repaired, and then a small rattle can job on the repair area around the fork crowns where the tubes joined. The head and down tube were a mess too. He said "Here son, I knew you would be happy"! Wow, Robbie, I was so happy. I ripped through the neighborhood streets. I would ride to my girlfriends house after I finished my homework and come home at 10:30 at night with my generator light setup. This went on for a couple of months and I then went up to my dad and said "Dad, what is the story behind that bike"? He said "Son, don't worry about it, just ride it". "I had a friend of mine weld it up down on Oak Lawn". I said "Come on Dad, where did it come from"? He said, "Son, do you really want to know? A boy was killed on it"! Robbie, I tripped out and was so much in shock and could never ride it again, especially at night to my girlfriends. I walked the mile and a half to my girlfriends house, which was 3 miles round trip. That bike and I were finished. Then I bought a 73 Royal Asport Tour de France.

Take care Robbie.

Regards, John Proch La Grange, Texas
