Tom- What's the ball diameter. IIRC this HS takes 3/16" (caged). If 5/32" has been subbed then both adjustment would be difficult as well as the fit of the crown race and lower cup would be off. Since many HSs take 5/32 this might be an easy mistake to make.

Subject: [CR] Dura Ace ex headset problems

Dear List:

Is there any trick/problem installing a Dura Ace Ex headset, the one with the scalloped nuts?

Headset is going onto a repainted Bob Jackson. Frame had a headset in it before painting so headtube/steerer was working fine, and there's no sign of damage.

But new headset (which just barely has enough threads to engage the top nut) won't adjust. Either too loose or binding with no perfect adjustment inbetween. The bottom cup seems to overlap more than a typical headset. Did I put it in wrong? Any suggestions? I checked the facing of the head tube and all seemed allright. Whattya think, list?
