Subject: Re: [CR] Rare bottom bracket widths

Last summer I built up an early 60s Paragon frame with period correct components. Paragon frames were made here in the Bay Area for a few years during the 1960s. I gently chased and faced the Nervex Professional BB without thinking of checking the width.

When I put the Stronglight BB in the adjustable cup was sticking out about 3mm too far. I checked the spindle length then the BB width. It was about 65mm wide so I did what we used to do back in the day. I put a 3mm wide Sturmey Archer spacer over the fixed cup and reassembled the BB.

I probably should have used a 1.5mm spacer on each side of the BB but I used a 1.5mm wide spacer behind the freewheel to correct the chainline.

We encountered the narrow BB problem frequently enough that we had an automatic fix. It was a good thing that I remembered that trick.
