This was of those great bicycle mysteries for me too.

I recently checked out a number of Gitane forks with a local frame builder. He showed me NOS Nervex and Wagner crowns that he'd had for many years and gave me some details about them.

Nervex fork crowns were stamped and welded steel while Wagner crowns were forged steel. Of course there are probably exceptions to this but I don't know about them.

If someone has more information please post it on the list. I'd love to know more myself, thanks.
