Subject: [CR] Centerpull pivot spacing on Herses

Dear list,

I've been looking at the rear pivot spacing on Rene Herse bikes with brazed-on centerpulls recently (both on the reneherse.com site and the Golden Age book), and have noticed that they often seem quite wide. For instance here:

Perhaps it's that Weinmann pivot spacing is wider than Mafac. But for most Mafacs (all but the Raids?), it seems to be generally necessary to mount the centerpull bosses almost on the insides of the stay on bikes built with seatstay caps that attach to the side of the seat lug, as RH bikes do. Peter Weigle, for example, mounts his thus:

So I'm wondering:

(a) am I right about this? Or do Rene Herse bikes with brazed-on rear centerpull bosses mount the brakes at the "recommended" spacing?

(b) if I'm right, how is the braking affected?

I ask all this out of curiosity and because I'm about to start building a bike with brazed-on centerpull bosses, and I wonder how to go about placing them. It seems they'd be held more securely on the centre of the stay, but that braking action would be better on the inside.

Thanks!
