Hi Jack.

I did this a couple of decades past, and it held up fine. The problem I had here in the hilly Bay Area is that a 42t still isn't that low of a gear. Triple crank arms have been pretty easy to come by the last few years, so getting the lower gearing wasn't hard. I think you will be fine in nice flat Sacramento, but if you head up into the hills, or down to the Bay Area, you may find yourself wishing for some better gearing.
