Subject: [CR] For Sale: Alberto Masi Gran Criterium 58cm c-t REDUCED

For the last time, at a reduced price, a nice Masi GC from the mid-1970s, made under Alberto Masi's supervision, includes Super Record headset in excellent shape, drop-out adjusters and seat-post binder bolt. Chrome is good enough that a restoration to conventional Masi graphics and paint would not be very expensive..

58cm center-to-very-top-of-the-seat-lug. A bit over 56cm c-c top tube. Spaced at 126mm. Stamped *UU58* on the bottom-bracket shell. Some kind of re-paint or manufacture code from the Vigorelli shop on one of the bb shell tangs, *32*. Also noted, a small *L* stamped on the bb-tang above the size stamp. According to Bob Hovey, via Alberto Masi, that *L* means Luciano brazed it up!

This frame acquired in about 1980 from a shop in Provence, France. Frame was repainted in the shop's team colors, with the shop badges as shown in the pictures at the link below. It could easily be restored to your taste, or leave as-is, it's kinda neat just the way it is. Includes frame/fork/Super Record headset in good shape/seat-post binder-bolt/trick flush dropout-adjusters, typical Alberto touch.

Expert consensus is mixed as to whether these are cast or pressed lugs--they look like pressed/filed lugs to me, but if they're cast, they've been very nicely finished off. The frame shows some features of the later Prestige (the beveled stay ends, mainly), but from other details it presents as a GC and it was represented as such to me.

Frame has a tiny bit of debris in the top-tube, might be a bit of loose corrosion, but nothing serious..most frames of this age have this to some degree, a bit of frame-saver will take care of it.

A nice Alberto GC at a fair price: $595 shipped in CONUS. Locals who pick-up pay $525!

Q: "Why do people spoil everything for themselves?

A: "In big ways, and little ways too, people do that all the time to themselves. We can't stand prosperity. We have to tinker with the machinery."
