Jan, I learned this the hard way when I got dropped on the first climb in my very first USCF sanctioned race in 1977 while riding my brand new Raleigh Pro Mk. IV.  That was in hilly northwest Arkansas which has some very steep climbs. I can get by with at 41x23 low gear nowadays because I live in (flat) south Louisiana!
