Paul Williams writes "... One has to wonder how many bikes were kitted out with old stock 1930s pieces in the immediate post-War years and during the War itself? At times it must have been a case of use what was available. ... These issues have also struck home with me as I contemplate building up a 1941/2 frameset..."

My 1944 Claud Butler Continental Club (CB's top model during the war) has Russ-type forks which may be recycled. Its Chater Lea looking fork crown looks like an earlier vintage, rather plain and chunky for a 1944 bike and what I see in various catalogs. However, I am guessing, and your input on the type and vintage of that fork crown would be welcome. See http://www.peterbrueggeman.com/cr/butler44.htm
