But of course . . . back in 1977 when I was an aspiring USCF Cat IV racer, the dust caps and valve stem covers were sacrificed off of my Raleigh Pro.  After all, anything the pros did MUST be right! (Never mind that they had team mechanics and their bikes provided to them.) Steve Whitting

When I worked in a bike shop in the '70's early 80's we always took off the Campagnolo dustcaps.  Unnecessary weight we thought, and the cranks looked cooler without them.

Now I wonder: doesn't it make sense to keep the threads clean so that the remover goes on well?  Do you have dustcaps on your cranks?
