Hi Chas., I was a newbie then and am a newbie now! Back in the day we rode our Schwinn Sting-Rays from White Rock Lake in Dallas to Sherman across the bridge (that is Okey land)! We were the only newbies that rode in 20 degree weather while all the wimps rode the bus to school. On Sting-Rays........1.3 miles 1 way to school, up hill all the way there. (they called us idiots). Just for kicks like in 67, I bought another electric blue (why they called it sky blue, I will never understand) Sting-Ray in 2005 and cleaned it up. Looked at it for 3 months and said, "Honey, let's sell it"! I got it out of my system. I am still a newbie riding this retarded steel lugged bike while all the Generation Y or Z or what ever you want to call them laughs at me while they zip by on their fiberglass (garbage) bikes. Those were the days. Glass globes lit up at night at the filling stations. Descent music, lugged steel bikes with sew-ups. Now? We work for food!

Back in the day, only newbies and nerds had dust caps on their cotterless cranks. They weren't cool!

In the desert Southwest we never worried much about rain!

I use them now in the Bay Area to keep dust out as they were intended. These days I try not to ride in the rain!

Also I've noticed that most of the CR riders use them...
