Hi Jon, Those gazillion spokes are for two things on the 20-24 inch wheels. The low-rider community and the stunt trick flying upside down, backwards and just one "oops" and it is wheel chair for life. Well, when I was traveling 53 on my Mondia in the 70's and one oops it would have been more than the wheel chair. It would have been more like the meat grinder (sorry ladies for the gore). I still don't know why the last TDF they kept replaying the scene where the guy indo-ed over the rock wall. Sick humor I guess. There has been frequent debate over the relative desirability of more spokes versus fewer spokes per wheel in the CR community. Has anyone ever seen an on-topic wheel with anything like this many spokes?
I know of 48s but that is as far up as I have seen any 700C, 27", or similar-diameter wheels go in the number of spokes. Seeing a 20" wheel with 144 spokes makes me wonder how a spoke wrench or fingers fit between the spokes....
