Ahoy ! What I understood from my tiny sector of the Petrie dish was the following with respect to removing dust caps, valve caps, QR springs and such (as applicable): If parts were absent then, More efficient repair No loose parts rolling around the track/course Maintaining the "race" purpose of only the essential equipment. Weight reduction was not even mentioned.

When I worked in a bike shop in the '70's early 80's we always took off the Campagnolo dustcaps.  Unnecessary weight we thought, and the cranks looked cooler without them.

Now I wonder: doesn't it make sense to keep the threads clean so that the remover goes on well?  Do you have dustcaps on your cranks?
