I have started to use Gunk "Carburettor and Parts Cleaner" with great success. It comes in a gallon can with a little basket inside for small parts. Although on the face of it, it is expensive $23.00 for the kit, I am amazed at how effective it is. I bought it from my local autoparts store.

I am just finishing a refurb on a '70 Hetchins that I acquired in sorry condition. I used this product to clean the derailleurs, pedals, hubs, shifters, etc. The parts came out of the solution bright and shiny with no scrubbing at all. I did pour a little from the can into a bowl, and use it with an old toothbrush to clean the hubs. It removed 40 years worth of crud from my bike parts, so old grease should be a breeze.

Hope this helps.

At the home shop, old method: WD-40, rags and screwdriver then Q Tips. New method: sub Clean Streak for the WD-40.

This is also what I do at the LBS I work at when the parts cleaner is out of order or when I can't leave the work bench.

That's the way I have done it for as many years as I can remember & I can't say that I have ever had a problem.  Kerosene seems to loosen up the old grease very well.  As a matter of fact, I just finished doing that to an off-topic set of hubs that probably had the original grease from the mid '80s.  They cleaned up very nicely.

> Hi Jon: I clean out old dry grease from the inside of bike hubs probably more than just about anyone. Yeah, I know it sounds like I am bragging and I hate doing that but I am pretty sure it is true. With that in mind I still may not be performing the most efficient operation the way that I do it but I use Simple Green dilluted 2:1 and use the spray bottle method along with a dental type steel scraper where many times that is exactly what I pretend to be is a dental hygenist scraping off plaque. I have the spray bottle ready and a piece of scouring pad along with old toothbrushes. It is a painstaken affair but I think that along with a good polishing of either some Mothers or Wizards on the hub shell it gets the job done. There is some evidence of the result in my photos on eBay...rockhopperbiking is my sceen name and my store name is BeeBopaDooBop (can't help it I am a fan of the blues) in case you are interested in seeing.
