Listers,

I had fun on my Peugeot mixte on Bike to Work Day here in Alameda today. Some highlights:

Up at 4 AM, rode over to work the Webster Street energizer station 6-9 AM. Gave away bikie swag in BTWD musette bags, fruit, coffee. bagels, free advice on helmets, etc., and never used the floor pump or tools I brought over in my grocery bag front panniers.

Found out at Jeff's house (the BTWD coordinator for BikeAlameda) that we counted 800 or so cyclists commuting to work at our several aid/energizer stations between 6 AM and 9 AM.

Picked up my Allegro from our storage locker--will try to get some building on t tomorrow at Stone's after (and if) Dennis trues my mixte's still-bent-out-of-shape wheels.

Counted bike and pedestrian traffic for 2 hours at one of our cross-estuary bridges (Alameda is an island) to document non-auto commute traffic.

Rode my mixte to our main library to help put on a League of Women Voters election forum (our primary is June 8).

Rode home in the cool, crisp air at 10 PM.

I have been cycling in and to community and political events like these since the 1970s, when I was in college ands was first persuading my mom to buy the Peugeot mixte that I later "inherited" from her. So my (lefty) politics and bike advocacy are as "vintage" as the bike I use to further this "revolutionary" (pun intended) social agenda: cycling is good for us and for our planet.

With warmest regards to all the dedicated cyclists hanging out in Dale's intercontinental garage,
