This cotter discussion has been, so far, very interesting. I have always thought that if I put the cotters in facing opposite directions and filed similarly if needed, things would be fine, and they have been fine. I like the advice to save pants cuffs and that one seems as good as any for the direction of these little beasts.

In 1971 I started working in a bicycle shop. I think it was about that time that I dreamed of having my own shop. I imagined that my shop would have only cotterless cranks and alloy rims on the wheels. I guess they were simple enough dreams because they came true. In fact, it seems like the whole US bike industry soon would be living my dream. A lot of my ideas have changed over the years but I still don't give a second look at bikes with cottered cranks or steel wheels. That is, unless it's some old Magistronis or the like. I hope I don't offend anyone by saying this, but U0-8s never did anything for me.

This posting will mark a change for me here on CR. I will include the name of my bicycle shop and the town it is in instead of the town in which I live.
